How a Macomb County winter actually behaves

Southeast Michigan averages about 45 inches of snow a season, but the average is misleading. What matters operationally is the number of distinct events over two inches, and that swings hard year to year. Two winters with identical totals can produce twelve billable pushes or twenty-two, depending on whether the snow arrived in a few large events or a long series of small ones.

That variance is why contract structure matters more than rate. A low per-visit rate in a heavy season costs more than a fair seasonal rate; a seasonal contract in a mild winter costs more than per-visit would have. Any company telling you one structure is simply better is not accounting for the fact that neither of you knows what the season will do.

Routes, timing, and what nobody will promise honestly

Properties are grouped geographically into routes. During an active storm every customer is somewhere on one, and where you sit in the sequence determines your clearing time. We are direct about this because the alternative — promising every customer they are first — is a promise that fails on the first serious night.

Commercial sites with early open times get sequenced ahead of residential, which is standard across this trade and worth knowing before you sign a residential contract expecting a 5am clear. Communities further out — Richmond Township, Memphis, Armada Township — sit later in a route than Macomb Township does, and we say so rather than letting someone find out in January.

De-icing chemistry, briefly

Sodium chloride is cheap, widely available, and stops doing useful work around 15 °F. Calcium chloride stays active near −25 °F, generates heat as it dissolves, and costs several times more. Magnesium chloride sits between them and is gentler on concrete and vegetation.

The honest version is that most residential ice problems in this county happen between 20 and 32 °F, where rock salt works fine and anything else is overspending. Deep-cold events are where the choice matters, and that is exactly when most companies quietly keep spreading the cheap product anyway.

What we do not do

No roof snow removal. No off-site snow hauling on residential contracts. No ice dam steaming. These are separate trades with separate equipment and separate insurance, and doing them as an add-on to a plow route is how people end up with damaged shingles and a claim.
