Lawn care, kept deliberately small

Why we limit it

Mowing is a volume business. The economics only work at density — a crew that can do twelve lawns on one street makes money, and a crew driving fifteen minutes between properties does not. Companies that take every lawn regardless of location end up either raising prices or cutting time per property, and the second one is what usually happens.

We keep our lawn list tight and close to our snow and hardscape routes. If you are on one of those streets, the pricing works and the service is consistent. If you are not, we will tell you honestly that another company will serve you better, and we mean it rather than saying it as a negotiating position.

What is included

• Weekly mowing through the growing season, cut height adjusted for the season rather than fixed year-round.
• String trimming and edging at hard edges, walks and beds.
• Clippings blown off hard surfaces, not into the street where they reach the storm drain.
• Spring and fall cleanups quoted separately, because their scope varies enormously by property.

Cut height, which actually matters

Most lawns in this county are cut too short. Michigan lawns are predominantly cool-season grasses — Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass and fescues — and they do best at roughly 3 to 3.5 inches through summer. Longer blades shade the soil, hold moisture, and out-compete crabgrass, which needs light at the soil surface to germinate.

Cutting at 2 inches makes a lawn look tidier for about four days and then makes it more vulnerable to drought stress and weeds for the rest of the season. We cut high, and we will explain why if it looks shaggier than you expected in July.

What we do not do

We are not a chemical applicator. Fertilization, weed control and grub treatment require a licensed pesticide applicator in Michigan, and we do not hold that license. If your lawn needs a treatment program we will tell you to call a company that does, rather than quietly applying something we are not licensed to apply.

We also do not do irrigation, tree work or landscape design planting.

The honest recommendation

If your lawn is small, flat and you own a mower, you almost certainly do not need us. Mowing is the most substitutable service we offer and the one where a homeowner's own labor is worth the most. Where we genuinely earn the money is on properties where the owner cannot safely do it, or where a rental or second property needs someone reliable in the neighborhood already.
