- Excavate to depth. Not just enough to hide the edge.
- Compact in lifts. Aggregate goes down in layers, each one compacted. One thick dump-and-roll is how you get settling.
- Design the drainage first. Water that cannot leave is what heaves a patio in February.
- Screeded bedding layer. Consistent depth, so the surface is flat and stays flat.
- Proper edge restraint. Pavers spread sideways without it. Every year.
- Polymeric sand. Locks the joints, resists weeds and washout.
