At 1.75 square miles, Center Line is the smallest municipality we serve and it is completely enclosed by Warren, which means our crews are already passing through it on the way to everywhere else. That genuinely helps response time here. The housing is dense postwar stock with short, narrow drives — small enough that per-push is usually the cheaper contract, and small enough that snow storage runs out by February on a heavy year.

The name is thought to come from the French, for the middle of three Potawatomi trails. St. Clement’s parish was established in 1854, the village incorporated in 1925 in the center of what was then Warren Township, and the city followed in 1936.

How Center Line handles snow: Center Line’s Department of Public Works salts every intersection when roads turn slick and more snow is expected, and begins plowing city streets after 1.5 to 2 inches has fallen, continuing until every street is cleared and salted. Below 17 degrees, which the city treats as the point where salt stops working, crews plow at 1.5 inches and salt once temperatures rise. The city plows sidewalks after 4 inches, but owners and occupants must still clear the walk in front of their property within 12 hours of accumulation. Snow from private property may not be pushed into the street, and owners can be cited for their contractor’s violations.
