Hidden pricing is not modesty about complexity. It exists so a salesperson can establish a number while standing in your backyard, after you have invested an hour, with no comparison available. Anchoring works far better in person than against a published range.
The cost of publishing is that we lose some calls to a cheaper quote. We would rather lose those in April than argue about them in July.
Why a patio is $18–$30 per square foot when pavers cost $3
Because the paver is a small fraction of the job. The price covers excavation, hauling the spoil away, geotextile, six inches of aggregate placed and compacted in lifts, bedding sand, cutting, edge restraint and polymeric sand. Material other than the paver, plus labor, is most of the number.
It is also why two quotes for the same patio can differ by 40 percent. The cheaper one is frequently proposing three or four inches of base instead of six, skipping the fabric, or bedding on stone dust. You cannot see any of that once the surface is down.
What pushes a quote to the top of a range
- Access. If a skid steer cannot reach the work area, aggregate and spoil move by wheelbarrow. On tight lots in Warren, Eastpointe and Center Line this is routinely the largest single swing factor.
- Tear-out. Removing an existing slab or failed patio adds disposal cost that has nothing to do with the new surface.
- Elevation change. Steps, raised patios and seat walls carry structural requirements a flat patio at grade does not.
- Curves. Cutting every unit along both edges typically adds 15 to 25 percent over the same area in a straight run.
- Drainage that has to be solved first. Sometimes the honest sequence puts a smaller invoice ahead of the one you called about.
What pushes it to the bottom
Straight runs, at-grade construction, good equipment access, no tear-out, and a rectangle rather than a shape. If your budget is tight, those five choices move a project more than any material substitution will.
The cheaper option, when it is the right one
We name it wherever it exists, and it costs us money to do so:
- If your patio has settled but the base is sound, releveling costs 25 to 40 percent of a rebuild.
- If your ice problem is a downspout, a $60 extension beats a $6,000 drain.
- If your driveway is purely functional, poured concrete costs less than pavers and performs well.
- If you are unsure you will use a fire feature weekly, a $300 portable bowl for one season beats a built-in you regret.
- If the existing porch structure is sound, resurfacing beats a full rebuild.

Questions people actually ask
Why do hardscape quotes vary so much for the same patio?
Because the invisible parts vary. A quote 40 percent cheaper is usually proposing three or four inches of base instead of six, skipping geotextile, or bedding on stone dust rather than ASTM C33 sand. Ask every contractor for base depth in inches, aggregate type and bedding material in writing, and compare those.
Is it cheaper to build a patio in the fall?
Slightly, sometimes, because schedules loosen after midsummer. It is not a large enough difference to drive the decision, and we would rather build in good conditions than promise a discount for working in poor ones. We stop entirely once the ground freezes.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Measurements, a written scope with the base spec on it, and a fixed price. If the honest answer is that you need drainage work rather than the patio you called about, you get that for free too.
What is the cheapest way to get more usable outdoor space?
A larger, simple, at-grade rectangular patio with good access, no tear-out and proper lighting. Curves, raised sections, built-in appliances and elevation changes all cost real money and none of them adds usable square footage the way plain area does.
Can I supply my own pavers?
Generally we would rather you did not. Warranty, color-lot consistency and breakage allowance all become unclear, and the saving is small because the paver is a minority of the cost. If you already own material we will look at it honestly and tell you whether it is usable.
Do you offer financing?
We are straight about this: we are a small operation and we do not run an in-house finance program. Most customers who spread the cost use a home equity line or a card, and we will happily stage a larger project across two seasons so the cost lands in two budgets instead of one.
