What actually moves the price
- Access. The biggest hidden variable in hardscape. A skid steer that can reach the back yard turns a two-day excavation into a morning. A 36-inch gate and a wheelbarrow does the opposite. This alone can shift a quote by thousands.
- Material. Standard rectangular pavers at the bottom of the range, large-format and tumbled old-world at the top. The base underneath costs the same either way, which is why the range is narrower than people expect.
- Site prep. Removing an existing concrete slab, correcting grade, or solving drainage before the build - all real work that has to happen first.
- Cuts and complexity. Curves, radii, inlays and borders are labour. Straight runs are not.
- Elevation change. Steps and walls multiply cost quickly compared to building on flat ground.
Why the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive
The single easiest place to cut a hardscape bid is base depth and compaction, because it is invisible the day the job finishes and for about two years after. A contractor who excavates four inches instead of eight, dumps the aggregate in one lift and rolls it once will beat our number comfortably. The patio looks identical in the photograph.
Then Michigan happens. Water gets into an under-compacted base, freezes ninety times over a winter, and the surface starts to move. By year three it waves. By year five it needs rebuilding, and rebuilding means paying for the excavation and the base twice.
We are not always the cheapest quote. We would rather explain exactly what is under your patio and why, and let you decide with the information in front of you.
How to compare quotes properly
Ask every contractor these five questions and the differences become obvious fast:
- How deep are you excavating, and how many lifts is the aggregate going in?
- What are you doing about drainage, and where is the water going?
- What edge restraint are you using, and how is it fastened?
- Is the price fixed, or does it change if you find something?
- What does the workmanship warranty cover, and for how long?
Then see your yard as a finished patio and get our fixed price.
Questions about what hardscaping costs in macomb county
Why is a paver patio $18-$30 per square foot when pavers cost $3?
Because the pavers are a small fraction of the job. The price covers excavation and disposal, aggregate base, compaction equipment, geotextile, bedding sand, edge restraint, polymeric sand, cutting, labour, insurance and warranty. The visible material on top is roughly a fifth of what you are paying for.
Do you offer financing?
We can point you at third-party financing options during the quote. We do not carry paper ourselves, so there is no incentive for us to push you toward a bigger project than you want.
Is the quote really fixed?
Yes. The number in your proposal is the number you pay. If we discover something genuinely unforeseeable underground we stop and talk to you before anything changes - we do not send a revised invoice at the end.
