Why does booking early matter at all?

Because of how routes work, and this is the part nobody explains. A snow route is not a list of customers — it is a driving order. A truck leaves the yard and clears properties in the sequence that minimizes distance, because at 3am in a storm every extra mile is time nobody has.

Early bookings define that sequence. When a property is added in January it does not get inserted into the middle of an efficient route; it gets appended wherever it fits. That is not punishment, it is geometry.

What waiting actually costs

Not money, at least not with us — our rate does not change with the calendar. What it costs is position. The difference between booking in September and booking after the first storm is the difference between being cleared early in a route and being cleared at the end of one.

On a three-inch night that difference is an hour. On a ten-inch night with everyone on the route needing two passes, it can be most of a morning.

The honest exception

If you have a short driveway, no mobility constraints, a flexible morning and a working snowblower, you may not need a contractor at all. Mowing and snow are the two services where a homeowner's own labor is worth the most, and we would rather say that in September than sell you something you did not need.

Where hiring genuinely earns its cost: you cannot safely do it, you leave for work before dawn, you have a long or steep drive, or you own a rental and need someone reliable already on the street.

What to have ready when you book

Approximate driveway dimensions, or just trace it on the calculator — it will give you square footage and a price.
What else needs clearing: front walk, public sidewalk frontage, porch and steps, a second drive or RV pad.
Where snow can go. Worth walking your own lot before the season, because on a tight lot the answer is genuinely limited and better agreed in advance.
Anything fragile. Landscape lighting, irrigation heads, a paver apron, a septic riser. Tell us in October, not after.

Does the forecast tell you anything useful?

Seasonal snowfall forecasts for southeast Michigan are not reliable enough to base a purchasing decision on, and anyone selling a contract on the strength of one is selling confidence they do not have. What is reliable is that Macomb County gets a real winter every year: counting from NOAA's daily records for Detroit Metro Airport, a 2-inch trigger has meant about 10 plow visits in a typical winter, with the middle half of the last 30 winters between 7 and 12.

There is no formal deadline, but practically the useful window closes when routes fill — generally through October and into early November. After the first real storm you are buying leftover capacity rather than choosing a slot.

Why does booking early get me cleared earlier?

Because routes are geographic. A truck clears properties in the order that makes driving sense, and early bookings anchor the route. A property added in January sits wherever it fits, which is usually the end.

Is it cheaper to book early?

Our rate is the same all season — $0.0715 per square foot with a $75 minimum, no early-bird premium and no late penalty. What changes with timing is your position in the route, not the price.

What if I wait and it turns out to be a mild winter?

Then per-visit service cost you almost nothing, which is exactly why per-visit exists. Booking early on a per-visit basis carries no downside — you are reserving a position, not committing to spend.

Can you take me on mid-season?

Usually yes, and we will tell you honestly where you land in the route. If we genuinely cannot service you well we will say that rather than take the money and disappoint you in February.

When does your season start?

November 15 through April 15. Equipment goes on before that and comes off after, but those are the dates we staff and stage salt for.
