Why routes are capped
A snow route is a fixed amount of time. From the moment accumulation hits the trigger depth, there are maybe four or five hours before people need to leave for work. One truck can service a finite number of properties in that window - and the number depends on how tightly clustered they are.
A company that keeps signing customers in December is a company whose route stops fitting inside the window. That is the mechanism behind every "they came at 2pm" complaint you have read about a snow contractor. Nobody sets out to be late; they oversold the route.
We cap ours, which means we turn work away in January. It also means the answer in January is genuinely "we are full", not a negotiating position.
What waiting actually costs
- Availability. The good contractors in your area are full before the first real storm. What is left in December is whoever still has capacity, and there is usually a reason.
- Rate certainty. Booking early locks the season's published rate.
- Route position. Existing and early customers are placed first when routes are built. Late signups fill gaps.
- The first-storm scramble. Everyone calls on the same morning. Nobody answers, because everybody is plowing.
The realistic timeline
- August to September. Best window. Full choice, rate locked, priority routing. Quiet enough that we can actually talk properly about your property.
- October. Still fine. Routes are filling but not full.
- Early November. Last realistic call. Most routes close during this month.
- December onward. Waiting list, or whoever still has room.
